My neurologist also put me on the extended release Topimax because I've been taking 100 mg of regular Topimax a day for over 4 months with little improvement. She also is trying amitriptyline (20-30 mg per day) as a preventative and for insomnia along with Ambien. How difficult is it to wake up after taking all of these medications especially if they are going to knock me out for long periods of time? I'm just curious if this is safe or if I need to find my 5th neurologist?
Using amitriptyline together with zolpidem may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and difficulty concentrating. Some people may also experience some impairment in thinking and judgment. Your doctor may know the potential risks of taking these medications together and has decided that the benefits outweigh those risks. May I suggest you keep a personal diary of how you feel in the morning (example), drowsy, unable to concentrate, etc. That way you can address the way your body is reacting to the medication.
