I have apparently had IBS for many year now but have managed it okay. It's been the last 2 years that it has become worse. I have tried all the IBS tablets with NO help. I have changed my diet with no change. Have now been given Amitriptyline but am worried it won't work either. Any feedback would be great.
I've had IBS-D for 30+ yrs. and got by with Imodium. Months ago my GI Dr. put me on Amitriptyline I think helped but I'm also lactose intolerant so stopped all dairy. Also stop red meat (hard to digest) and fake sugars (bad for IBS). A side effect of Amitriptyline is fatigue and I can no longer live with feeling like a zombie so I've stopped taking it. 10 mg. at bedtime and woke up in the morning with terrible fatigue which lasted til mid afternoon. Pls read on this site about amitriptyline and you will find many people complaining of the same problem. Other side effect and complaints is weight gain. My primary doctor also gave me samples of Welchol which is a cholesterol medication whose side effect is constipation. She doesn't normally prescribe it for IBS but mine was so bad I could hardly leave the house so I've been taking it, too.
I hope by now you've seen a good GI Dr. to find out what works best for you. As a side note I also have fibromyalgia. My rheumatologist says about 30% of people with fibro also suffer from IBS. Good Luck to you. I'd love to know if you found help if you'd care to post.
