... Anyway I have been given amiltriptyline to help me sleep. I see it is also used for pain. I guess what I want to know is if anyone can relate to my situation and weather or not i should be worried about taking this
Amitriptylin is a very old anti-depressant which is often used for sleep because of it's sedative effects. As far as I know there is no reason to be concerned about becoming or triggering addiction. It operates very differently from opiates or benzo's. Just be sure you are getting it from a doctor and that doctor knows about your potential for problems with addiction, so you don't get prescribed something that will set things off. Take care.
Yes, amitriptyline is an "old style" antidepressant in the tricyclic category. It is, also, used for treating pain and helping some to sleep. It is safe for a recovering person to use. I wouldn't worry about taking this medication. You may experience some side effects when you first start taking like blurred vision, constipation or diarrhea, headache, and nausea, but if you do they will likely subside with continued use.
Good luck on the new med,
