For those of you who have taken this medicine, Do you think it will help me? I have been on pain medicine for over 6 years, and severely constipated for most of that time. I have been trying stool softeners, milk of mag, miralax, etc... to absolutely no avail. A different Dr. gave me this to try, I had an MRI and I am literally full of sh**!!! As a matter of fact, I had a scan done 2 weeks earlier with contrast and they could still see the contrast way up at the top. It had not moved an inch, that's how badly packed I am. I'm just wondering if this medicine is worth my time, or if I'm heading down another dead end road? Any advice you can give me would be GREATLY APPRECIATED thanks. B.
Amitiza (hyomax) is a good maintenance med for IBS with constipation, but I doubt it will unplug you. You need to get yourself cleaned out and unfortunately you will need to use a harsher laxative such as Dulcolax. The best way to get everything moving is to drink 1/2 bottle of magnesium citrate (it is OTC). Be sure you have a day to stay home though, as this is one of the preps used before a colonoscopy. Whatever you use, and as a daily routine, drink 8-10 glasses of water every day. This is very important -- with laxatives you can dehydrate. Plus the hard, dry stools draw the fluids from your body. After you have everything moving, then take the amitiza daily, as directed. If you are really, really uncomfortable (which I imagine you are) you can use a Dulcolax suppository. It works in 15-60 minutes. Be sure to use any of these laxatives AS DIRECTED. Don't become impatient. It took more than one day for you to become impacted and will take a couple of days to resolve. I hope you feel better soon.
