If you have inflammation and you use heat, it can make swelling worse because it brings more blood and heat to the area. Ice should be used for pain when inflammation is present this should help to reduce swelling. See your Dr or dentist if it is a tooth causing inflammation. You may have an infection and may need antibiotics if infection is causing inflammation.

If, at any time, the swelling makes it difficult to breathe or to swallow, you should call 911 or go to emergency room.
