This could be something that isn't related to the ambien or its making it worse. Did they describe the problem? If you're having short periods you don't breathe you have sleep apnea, but you should see your dr about it. If that was taken care of you may not need ambien to sleep, sleep apnea interrupts your sleep during the night.
