Alirocumab is used together with a low-fat diet and a "statin" medication in people with an inherited type of high cholesterol (heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia).
This condition can cause high blood levels of LDL cholesterol ("bad" cholesterol) and can also cause plaque to build up inside your arteries.
Alirocumab works by helping the liver reduce levels of bad cholesterol.
