This is the mechanism that makes this a time release pill. There are ingredients in the outer part that begin to work immediately as it dissolves, the inner core is designed to release later, dissolving later or more slowly, allowing for the pill to last 12 hours. You never want to break a time release pill, crush it or bite it or chew it-basically time release pills are meant to be swallowed whole. If you alter the pill, it could release too much medication all at once. All pills have inert ingredients that make a pill a pill-usually things like corn starch, coloring agents and such. There should be a list of inactive ingredients on the bottle or packaging somewhere, if you are curious.
