All labs have been consistently good. Just had my checkup with Hep Dr. I will start a pred taper in the fall at that time 6mp will be raised. Anyone out there undergoing this treatment??? Concerned about long term side effects of 6mp...
I don't know anything about Mercaptopurine but a quick scan via Google describes it as inhibiting an enzyme needed to produce white cells. For my AIH I take predinsolone and Myfortic which inhibits a different enzyme from Mercaptopurine. Myfortic was first used to prevent organ transplant rejection but now has wider applications in autoimmune diseases. You're right to concerned about long term side effects of your medication but the thing is, all these drugs have side effects. I've found it's just a matter of seeing how a particular drug suits me. For instance I had an allergic reaction to the more often prescribed and usually well tolerated, Azathioprine, so I had to find a good immunologist to tell advise me on the Myfortic alternative which I tolerate well.
A couple of tips: Be careful about infection. With a suppressed immune system you don't want to sit on the bus next to someone with a hacking cough. And don't spend too long in the sun without applying sunscreen. I'm having a lot of trouble with opportunistic skin cancers. Wide brimmed hats are my best friends these days!
It's an anxious time when you embark on this journey but take heart, statistics suggest you'll be ok – with perhaps a lifestyle adjustment or two.
