... diabetic. are kidneys failing .what tests do i need and steps to take
There are other reasons for a blood glucose to go up, like kidney function, infection and dehydration. If you doctor hasn't followed up on those labs, I would find another doctor. Hopefully he's not the kind who would write you off because you're 75 but the glucose alone should have set up some red flags for him. Meanwhile, make sure you drink at least 8, 8 oz glasses of water a day.
That could depend on a lot of things. Were you fasting when you had your glucose test done? This will make a huge difference. You kidney GFR is not really that bad for your age. Mine is 39, & my creatine & bun are out of whack, but my doctor isn't overly concerned & you are 10 years older than me. There is another test called your A1c that is more important. Do you have a copy of your test results? If so, please add the A1c, creatine, & bun numbers to your question. This will give a better picture of what is really going on. What about your cholesterol & triglycerides? What did you eat before your tests & the day before? Lots of unanswered questions here to make a judgment call... Mary
I agree with the two above. Your weight is also a factor.
Personally I would call the doctor office and ask for a full explanation of these results, treatments being considered and ask for further testing. Let the doc know that you are concerned about this, want to know if you are diabetic, and how your kidneys are doing. That is a totally good set of questions and these ought to be honored and the time taken to answer.
Be sure to bring someone with you to listen as well. Write all questions down and ask until you understand. At this point, you are really not that out of whack. Stay away from sweets and white flour for a while. Lots of veggies and natural fruit. This may take some time, however, to get your answers, so ask until you can get what you need.
