I've just been advised to stop my coumadin use & begin 81mg Aspirin.I have the antiphospholipid antibody, am allergic to Herparin agents, along with a lower than normal platelet count of 74,000 - stable for 3 months now. Despite these issues, I am as asymptomatic as one can be. No bleeding issues at all. My coumadin use was for avoiding a stroke event when in A-Fib. I have a Medtronic Consulta pacemaker pacing 100%. I have had an A-Fib event 3 times this year to date. Each event lasting 1-3 hours.
Is aspirin really an effective alternative to coumadin?

I read a New England Journal of Medicine report a number of months ago that a study showed aspirin to as effective as coumadin. My clinical cardiologist at the time disagreed with that report.
