because its just a place to meet people who can supply the drugs he wants? ... does NA help or hider?
He has nothing to loose by trying it. Now, rehab is where I heard the best drug contacts were made..But for me, I could NOT have done it w/o them, (NA/AA) groups. I went cold turkey, and thought I could handle it, actually did for 3 months, then, my life fell apart and I could NOT handle anything on my own, I was desperate to use or drink, anything to block the hell and pain of life. So, I started to go to meetings. it has been 15 months. So far, so very, very good. I could NOt have done it with out the help of the amazing men and women of AA/NA.
If it is an 'open meeting' (most are, it will say on the meeting list), then you could go with him too. It might be just what he needs instead of trying to walk in to a new group of strangers alone, for the first time.
Hi need2understand - Well, as my old sponsor used to say, "If you fell off a ship in the ocean, would you grab the life vest I threw? Or would you ask for a different color?" Drugs can be found anywhere, if you're looking for them. I personally prefer AA, as there seems to be more recovery there. And, all meetings are different whether they're book studies, speaker mtgs, etc. People who are desperate to stay clean will do whatever it takes to avoid using. He'll find whatever he wants to find at meetings... drugs, recovery, sponsors, good sober friends, or isolation & boredom. In 23 years of going to mtgs, mostly AA, although opiates are my weakness of choice, I've never run into anyone selling drugs... but, then I wasn't looking for them, either! Good luck, and learn all you can from everyone, even Al Anon. Jillian
