I was diagnosed with ADD a while ago. can someone tell me why would 20mg XR Adderall only work for a little bit but not long as I need. I told my doctor about it so he decided to increase my dose to 25mg XR to take one once daily. Does anyone know why this is and if there are other medications that are similar to adderall and If so do they work the same!? Any feedback will be very appreciated. Thanks
It would probably not work long enough because either your metabolism processes it faster than others or it may just be the dose is insufficient for you.
The two big ones for ADD/ADHD are dextro-amphetamine (hundreds of names) and methylphenidate (aka Ritalin). Both of these medications come in a variety of formulations: slow release, extended release, immediate release, continuous release and so on.
Your doctor has increased your dose by 25% when you look at the numbers. It sounds to me like he is being sensibly cautious in finding a dose that works effectively for you and is slowly adjusting upwards to find the minimum therapeutic dose in you. It is simply one of those situations where you should only take the amount needed to control your symptoms effectively. This gives them more 'maneuvering' room if and when increases may be needed.
I can't take XR because I don't absorb well. My doctor prescribed 20 MG 3x per day. At the time I could only get 10mg pills. Yes, the government controls how much is allowed to be sold each month or year. In fact I had knee replacement surgery and at the end of one month my pharmacy couldn't fill my RX because they had "sold their quota for the month.
I did really well with the 10 mg. It allowed me to take it when I need the boost but cut back when I don't need it. I now take 20mg to 30mg in the morning depending on how I feel and another 20mg in the afternoon. Sometimes I don't even need the afternoon pill and rarely I need the eXtra 10mg a little later. Ask for the non-XR at maybe 10mg for 3x per day and see how that goes (if he'll do that). Adderall may not be for you or maybe it's the XR. At least if you try the regular Adderall you'll find out if it's drug or the extended release that's the problem.
WARNING! Do NOT take the generic pill that's made by Malinkgort (or something like that ). It's white round octagonal with an M imprint on it. Insist on Teva, who bough the patent and now makes the generic and the "brand " pills. I just got the white pills from Costco and it made me sick. I looked on this site and a lot of people are getting sick from it. I went back to Wagrees and paid $100 more to get the orange oval TEVA makes and everybody says I look much better than I have in the 2 weeks I took that crap.

If you switch from adderall 20mg to 25mg, is it legal for your doctor to take the 20mg you paid for?
