I was on depo from May-October of 2015 and was due for another shot January 3, 2016. I decided to not take it or get on another form of birth control because I was dealing with side effects from depo. Last month I bled for 5 days and my doctor said it was just abnormal bleeding. Now I just started again and its been 28 days and can't tell if it's a period since I've read about cycle and fertility delay also bad stories of no bleeding at all or fertility.
You can't tell, unless you know whether or not you have started ovulating. An ovulation kit can give you that information, as can learning to read your body's ovulation signs, via natural family planning. You can learn that online, but it takes a couple of months to get to reliably judge your body's signs.
It's not unusual to take 18 months or more to regain your fertility, from the point at which you stopped using Depo Provera.
