4 mo. ago started to drink 4/part OJ, cranberry juice, grenadine, ginger ale, 8 oz 3x/d. Still has UTI's. Takes: Centrum, B12, Glucosamine/Chondroitin, Vit C,Biotin,Advil, baby Asprin. Eats grapefruit daily w/fruits in season. She has incontinence only when lying down and has for yrs, but worse in past 2 yrs. has constipation to the point of being impacted and go to ER, or has to use glove to remove it. Last mo, had BM.s 2xD, now no. Uses Miralax for yr.s and Fleet enemas. Thoughts please! Thank you and God bless!

I'm sorry to hear about your Mom's UTIs. How often does her genital area get a good cleaning? My GYN has suggested getting a clean squeeze bottle filled with clean water and having her flush her whole genital area with it to clean herself. Front to back only. You'll probably have to check the bottle daily for cleanliness. She may touch it to herself and contaminate it. Mom is probably forgetting the instructions she gave you as a kid: girls need to always wipe from the front to the back. She could be bringing bacteria from her stool area into her vaginal/urethral area. This is very common for older women. I had to re-educate my own mother for the same problem. Stools are primarily made up of bacteria.
Miralax can be addictive and cause your Mom's body to stop doing it's job of producing a BM. The best, most natural way I used for many years was to buy flax seed at a health food store, where it should be refrigerated and kept that way once it's at home. Then I used a Mr. Coffee grinder to grind the flax seeds freshly every day and add them to oatmeal with brown sugar and cinnamon to taste. Eating that kept me very regular with no diarrhea. Next option is Benefiber to add to water. It stirs in completely and looks and tastes like water. Big stores make their own store brand which is cheaper. It's dextrin or wheat dextrin depending on which product you buy. This is fiber, not a laxative. Lastly, there are prescription medicines to help your Mom go. Always avoid the ER trip or enemas when you can. Stool softeners can help, too. Use the Miralax or dulcolax only when all else fails and to avoid Mom getting 'backed-up'. Monitor how often she must go in order to keep from being impacted and go to your "big gun" when she's not gone within the time it seems she needs to. Let's say Mom has to go at least every other day to avoid impaction. Get the laxatives out for the night of the 1st day she has no BM. Don't wait any longer.
The juice drink seems like a good idea, but it didn't work. Possibly try cranberry juice or another acidic juice in a little water by itself. Maybe that'll go down.
