My 8 yr old daughter weighs 110.5 pounds. Her doctor or any kind of weight loss programs won't accept her because of age. We have tried all kinds of diets, etc & nothing is working. I'm worried if she keeps gaining, she might have diabieties. Is there any drug that she can take to help lose?
I agree with Kaismama, you need to talk to the pediatrician about it and you need to see a nutritionist too if you can. I would advise you not to just put HER on a "diet" but instead clean up diet for the whole family. If you dont bring junk in the house, she cant eat it (at least at home). If the whole family works on eating healthy, she wont feel so singled out like everyone else gets treats but not her. At this age, it is a behavior issue (if you have ruled out all physical problems like the other poster mentioned-thyroid, pituitary issues etc) and it is YOU who needs to teach her appropriate choices and teach portion control. Visiting a nutritionist is good because it will help you to learn to make nutritious low fat healthy meals. She is too young to take medications for weight issues plus you dont want to teach her that taking a drug is an answer.
She is young enough to change her behaviors as they are not as set in as an adults are but it is up to you as a parent to lead by example. Make it a mission to get the whole family to eat healthy and get active. It is a great way to bring your family closer together by doing physical activities together and shop for healthy foods together. There are multiple web sites that teach nutrition for free as well like MealsMatter.com and the food pyramid web site which I think is foodpyramid.gov or something like that if visiting a nutritionist is not an option.
