I have been subscribed tramadol and ibuprofen for the pain but my face is very swollen and sore. I have some codein I used to take for tooth ache. Is it safe to take the codein aswell?
From personal experience (lower back and knee damage) I recommend this sequence... I try the Tramadol with 800 mg Ibuprofen first. If that doesn't make the pain bearable, I wait AT LEAST four hours for the Tramadol to "wind down", then take a Tylenol #3 (codeine) and another 400-600 mg Ibuprofen. So far, for six years, one or the other has worked for me. My sympathy with that dental surgery! :-(
I found that ice to my face worked better then any pain med. How much tramadol was prescribed? Be careful with the ibuprofen, don't take more then prescribed because of the risk of bleeding. Take the tramadol every 6 hrs or whatever its ordered, don't wait longer then that. Tramadol works better if taken regularly.
From personal experience, nothing is better for pain than ibuprofen. Not even the narcotics. But I can't take it so I'm always stuck with the real drugs. You should only take it on a short term basis though. And honestly 400mg should be plenty to take the edge off the pain. No matter what you do, you're going to hurt for a couple days. Good luck!
