I have been taking Klonopin (my prescription is 1 mg, 3x a day) as needed for about a year. Before that, I was taking Ativan for about 2 years. I take Klonopin pretty infrequently, but if I have a panic attack I usually take 2 mg at once because 1 mg doesn't seem to calm me down. I had one of the worst panic attacks I've had in years tonight and took 3 mg at once for the first time. Should I be worried about overdosing or other potential side effects? I am on a few other meds as well. I have taken 2 mg of Klonopin at once many times and never had an adverse reaction.
In my opinion it is a high dose and as you are probably aware higher doses don't necessary lead to faster onset of action. My concern about your taking a full day's dose at onc time has to do with building tolerance to the medication. While you may be taking Klonopin infrequently, your body could still get used to that occasional high dosage.
The way I like to look at some of these meds in determining what the max one time dosage should be is to ask: What's the highest dosage available as a single pill (or tablet or capsule, etc.)? For Klonopin, the highest dosage available in a single pill is 2 mg. Therefore, that should be the highest dosage that one should take at a time. I know that is a very rough rule of thumb by which to judge "high dose" but maybe you could appreciate my logic.
Anyway, all the best and take care for now.
