Wow, depression sneaked up on me. SSRI's have never worked for me.MAO inhibitors do work but cannot take them anymore. Lyrica if too much, over 150mg daily causes severe disassociation. Now, my MD wants to add Cymbalta and I am afraid to take them both. Lyrica works in low dosage for my Fibro pain. Does anyone have any advise?
I was taking 600mg of Lyrica and 45mg of Mirtazapine for FM and depression. The weight gain side effect of this combination was horrendous so a change was recommended. I have weaned down to 150mg of Lyrica, off Mirtazapine completely and onto 60mg of Cymbalta. My FM pain is better on the low dose Lyrica and Cymbalta than on the high dose of Lyrica. I had a tough time moving from Mirtazapine to Cymbalta (major anxiety issues) but after 3 weeks on Cymbalta things are improving. The plan is to go off Lyrica totally and let the Cymbalta look after me but my doctors want me to be more mentally stable before we do this.
I have had no problems taking both these drugs... but, as we well know, what works for some doesn't work for others.
Don't be scared to try it. It may be the best thing ever - if it doesn't work than we just keep hoping for something that does.
Best of luck
Inglenook gave you very good advice.
If the current med regime is not working go to Plan B. Make sure the doc goes into a lot of details.
I was on the Lyrica for a year for nerve pain. I NEVER had pain relief no matter how high the dose was.
I’ve since talked to another well-know doc in a different specialty. He laughingly bet I had no relief. He said the studies coming back are not as hopeful as how they advertised it.
I was also on Remeron for sleep. I had not looked at myself in 3 months because I was so sleep deprived. I looked like Dolly Parton! 4 months and almost 30lbs!
Now I may have to have knee replacements even though I got the weight off the arthritis continued to get worse.
Now the CYMBALTA ! You are going to get mixed reviews on this one because of the reported withdrawal effect.
I take 60mg am (night dose affected my sleep).
I can honestly say I do not have side effects . I actually though about stopping it because I thought it wasn’t working (of course, under doc approval). I tapered down without problems but I noticed I was irritable every day so I went back on.
The psych meds have totally different reactions from one person to another.
Do yourself a favor a start a symptom diary. It will take a few min every day.
You know the 0-10 pain scale?
You can do the same with other symptoms. 0 meaning no vomiting and #10 would be intense nausea with retching. #5 could be no appetite but forcing yourself to eat a meal. #7 No appetite. No intake of food and only sips of fluids.
When you go for your check-up you will calm and collected because you have your notebook.
Docs also seem to respect the patient who comes in well-prepared.
Best wishes to you
I have suffered w/Fibromyalgia for many, many yrs. I was diagnosed in 1981 by a Rheumatologist that took a special interest in that disease. At that time he informed me to take Xanax for my overactive nerves & I'm still taking it in addition to Lyrica 100mg a day! I tried Cymbalta once it it made me feel strange & gave me heart palpation ( which I certainly can't deal with). My doctor also has me taking an antidepressant (Celexa) which I take at night. I hope this answer will help you!
