... Can I have a glass of wine in the evening?
While your question about having "A glass" of wine in the evening certainly sounds quite innocent. It is not advisable to drink any alcohol while taking Cephalexin because alcohol can actually cause the medication to be ineffective. This reaction occurs because the enzymes our bodies use to break down the alcohol are the same ones that we use to break down the medication. If the body is busy breaking down the alcohol, it cannot break down the medication and in the best case scenario - the body will simply get rid of the unused medication. Worst case scenario, the medication will build up in your body in an unchanged form and can cause severe allergic reaction or an overdose type reaction.
If you took the medication before the alcohol, then the enzymes are busy breaking down the medication and cannot convert the alcohol. Then you run the risk of liver damage and increased side effects from the alcohol like dizziness and disorientation.
It is best not to combine these two. Happy and speedy healing!
