and am to stop the alprazolam. And take just the buspirone alone. I am allowed up to 60 mg a day of The Bupirone, gradually. I may not need that much. My question is can I expect symptoms from withdrawal if I take 1mg a day for 3 days .5 a day for 3 days and then .25 for 3 days while gradually adding the Buspirone. thanks for your help or is there a better way to stop the alprazolam while adding Buspirone, or the short time I have been taking the alprazolam going to be a problem at all?
If you have been taking alprazolam in that amount for any length of time I do not recommend stopping it suddenly, or even within the time suggested above.
Go to benzo.org.uk and find the ASHTON Manual. It is NOT recommended to stop using alprazolam and replacing it slowly with another drug over any less than six MONTHS.
I am currently cutting my lorazepam from 2.5mg one tab qds (10mg daily) to 5mg daily, and the supervising psychiatrist will not contemplate that reduction over any less than ONE YEAR.
Withdrawal symptoms from BZD withdrawal can manifest even six months after the last dosage.
Buspirone is NOT a BZD and acts upon different receptors in the brain, so it is even more important in your case to be very careful indeed. You must change onto Buspirone via a benzodiazepine with a far longer half life than alprazolam (diazepam is the one usually used but if you find that too sedating then use MEDAZEPAM, best brand RUDOTEL, acceptable alternatives ANSILAN or the LABORMED Pharma generic Mz10, which has an almost identical profile to diazepam but is far less sedating at lower dosages).
Many doctors make huge mistakes when dealing with patients on benzodiazepines, especially those like Lorazepqm and alprazolam which have very short half lives, resulting in seizures which in extreme circumstances can easily be fatal.
Finally, just as a matter of interest, I personally tried Buspirone for my very long standing GAD/panic disorder and found that it had no effect at all, and so I very rapidly returned to benzodiazepines! Only <30% of patients in a survey (ref meds cape) found that Buspirone had any effect and those whose anxiety problem was considered severe reported absolutely zero relief from this drug. It is debatable whether any effect is placebo, as so few people actually find that it helps any anxiety-related conditions at all. (I would stick with the alprazolam if I were you!)
