Tetanus Antitoxin Indication
For use in domestic animals for prevention and treatment of tetanus.
This product is prepared from the blood of horses repeatedly injected with large doses of the toxin of Clostridium tetani.
Administration And Dosage
1500 units, minimum, if injected within 24 hours of exposure. Administer subcutaneously, intravenously or intraperitoneally. Increase dose relative to the lapse of time following exposure to as much as 30,000 to 100,000 units in animals which are showing symptoms. Massive initial doses may succeed in effecting a cure where repeated smaller doses of the same aggregate volume may have no value.
It should always be remembered that good nursing and proper supportive treatment, in addition to the administration of antitoxin, will improve the patient's chances for recovery.
Tetanus Antitoxin Caution
Store in the dark at 2° to 7°C (35° to 45°F). Avoid freezing. Use entire contents when first opened. Do not administer to food producing animals within 21 days before slaughter.
In case of anaphylactoid reaction, administer epinephrine.
Phenol and thimerosal added as preservatives.
It has been reported that biologicals of equine origin may in some manner be associated with the development of hepatitis (Theiler's disease)1,2 when injected into the equine species. The incidence of Theiler's disease is rare and in affected animals may be manifested as hepatitis, icterus, anorexia, emaciation and death.
