Description
PENMED is an antibacterial agent effective against a wide variety of pathogenic organisms. It is the water-insoluble salt of benzyl penicillin containing one molecule of penicillin G combined with one molecule of procaine base.
PENMED, aqueous suspension is a sterile free-flowing product prepared from penicillin G procaine crystalline. Each mL contains 300,000 I.U. of penicillin G procaine.
Penmed Indications And Conta-indications
Clinical results following administration of penicillin G procaine, aqueous suspension are similar to those observed with other repository forms of penicillin. It may be used, therefore, in those cases in which penicillin or repository forms of penicillin procaine are indicated.
PENMED, aqueous suspension is indicated in the treatment of infections caused by penicillin-sensitive organisms such as:
Cattle
Actinomycosis; blackleg; calf diphtheria; foot rot; joint infections; leptospirosis; malignant edema; mastitis; metritis; navel infections; pneumonia; pyelonephritis; shipping fever complex; tetanus (in early stages, with antitoxin); wound infections, and other infections caused by or associated with penicillin-sensitive organisms.Swine
Erysipelas; joint infections; leptospirosis; mastitis; metritis; navel infections; pneumonia; wound infections, and other infections caused by or associated with penicillin- sensitive organisms.Sheep
Blackleg; joint infections; mastitis; metritis; navel infections; pneumonia; wound infections, and other infections caused by or associated with penicillin-sensitive organisms.Horses
Bacterial complications associated with influenza; joint infections; metritis; navel infections; pneumonia; strangles; tetanus (in early stages, with antitoxin); wound infections, and other infections caused by or associated with penicillin-sensitive organisms.Small Animals (dogs, Cats, Mink, Rabbits, Foxes)
Bacterial infections associated with viral diseases; bronchitis; middle ear infections; leptospirosis; pneumonia; snuffles; sore hocks, tetanus (in early stages, with antitoxin); tracheitis; wound infections, and other infections caused by or associated with penicillin-sensitive organisms. The use of PENMED, aqueous suspension is not indicated in infections due to gram-negative organisms or viruses.
Penmed Cautions
Sensitivity to penicillin or to procaine. FOR INTRAMUSCULAR USE ONLY.
Allergic reactions (urticaria, contact dermatitis, serum-sickness-like syndromes) are observed occasionally; however, and probably are the result of individual hypersensitivity. This hypersensitivity may be either pre-existent or may develop following the use of penicillin. In urticaria, caused by penicillin, the use of antihistamine compounds has been successful in alleviating the symptoms in many cases. Mild reactions and those responding to the usual treatment of such conditions are not contraindications to the further administration of penicillin. Severe uncontrollable reactions require discontinuance of penicillin therapy. In case of an anaphylactic reaction, administer epinephrine immediately.
In suckling and fattening pigs, administration of procaine penicillin G will cause occasional transient pyrexia, vomiting, shivering and incoordination. Abortions have also been reported in pregnant sows and gilts. If the condition has not changed in 36-48 hours, the treatment should be re-evaluated and a veterinarian should be consulted.
Warnings
Milk taken from treated animals within 72 hours after the latest treatment must not be used in food. Treated animals must not be slaughtered for use in food for at least 5 days after the latest treatment with this drug. Do not administer to horses that are to be slaughtered for use in food.
Administration
Shake Well Before Using. Only The Intramuscular Route Is Recommended For The Administration Of Penmed, Aqueous Suspension.
