Monensin Premix Indications

Broiler chickens and growing turkeys:

1. As an aid in the prevention of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria necatrix, E. tenella, E. acervulina, E. brunetti, E. mitis, and E. maxima in broiler chickens.

2. As an aid in the prevention of coccidiosis in growing turkeys caused by E. adenoeides, E. meleagrimitis and E. gallopavonis.

Cattle:

1. For improved feed efficiency in beef cattle (steers and heifers) fed in confinement for slaughter.

2. As an aid in the prevention of coccidiosis caused by Eimeria bovis and Eimeria zuernii. Note to user: Coccidiosis occurs sporadically in first lactation dairy heifers, but is not considered a significant disease in mature dairy cows.

3. For increased rate of weight gain in growing cattle on pasture (slaughter, stocker and feeder cattle, and beef and dairy replacement heifers) of greater than 180 kg (400 lb) body weight.

4. For reduction of milk fat percentage in lactating dairy cows.

5. For minimizing loss of body condition during lactation in dairy cows.

6. For improving feed efficiency of milk protein production in lactating dairy cows.

Sheep:

For the prevention of coccidiosis associated with pathogenic Eimeria spp. in sheep.

Goats:

For the prevention of coccidiosis associated with Eimeria crandallis, E. christenseni, and E. ninakohlyakimovae in goats.

Dosage and Administration

Important - must be thoroughly mixed in feeds before use.

Broiler chickens and growing turkeys:

Thoroughly mix 500 g (0.50 kg) of MONENSIN Premix in one metric tonne (1,000 kg) of feed to provide monensin at 100 g monensin activity per metric tonne of feed. To ensure adequate mixing, an intermediate blending step may be performed prior to manufacturing a complete feed.

Broiler chickens - feed the medicated feed continuously as the sole ration.

Growing turkeys - feed continuously as the sole ration.

Cattle:

Complete diet - which includes complete feed plus roughage:

For indications 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6: MONENSIN Premix can be mixed in dry supplement prior to final mixing.

For indications 1 and 2: MONENSIN Premix can be used in the following thixotrope liquid supplements: Promolas Liquid Supplement Suspension, Westway Feed Products.

Indication 1:

Option A) Mix not less than 165 g and not more than 240 g MONENSIN Premix per tonne (1,000 kg) (to provide not less than 33 g and not more than 48 g monensin activity) to market weight.

Feed continuously at a rate of not less than 33 g and not more than 48 g monensin activity per tonne (1,000 kg) until animals reach market weight.

Note: The data used to support a claim for feed efficiency for a dose range of 33 to 48 ppm was derived from a meta-analysis, including 11 studies and more than 11,000 animals. This analysis demonstrated an additional improvement in feed efficiency of 0.05 units on a “deads out” basis in cattle fed 48 ppm when compared with those fed 33 ppm. In some herds, no additional improvement in feed efficiency was shown from feeding monensin at levels greater than 33 ppm. Decisions on the appropriate dose of MONENSIN Premix should be made in consultation with your veterinarian.

Option B) Mix 55 g MONENSIN Premix per tonne (1,000 kg) for the initial 28 days then mix 165 g MONENSIN Premix per tonne (1,000 kg).

Feed continuously at an initial rate of 11 g monensin activity per tonne for the first 28 days followed by 33 g of monensin activity per tonne (1,000 kg) until animals reach market weight.

Indication 2: Mix 110 g MONENSIN Premix per tonne (1,000 kg) (to provide 22 g of activity). Feed continuously at a rate of 22 g monensin activity per tonne (1000 kg) during periods of exposure to coccidiosis or when coccidiosis is likely to be a hazard.

Indications 4 and 6: Mix not less than 80 g and not more than 120 g MONENSIN Premix per tonne (1,000 kg) (to provide not less than 16 g and not more than 24 g of monensin activity). Feed continuously at a rate of 16 - 24 g monensin activity per tonne (1,000 kg).

NOTE: Indication 4: The expected efficacy of this product for reduction of milk fat percentage may be affected by dietary factors. Reduced efficacy may be expected with diets higher in fibre or lower in unsaturated oils.

Indication 5: Mix not less than 40 g and not more than 120 g MONENSIN Premix per tonne (1,000 kg) (to provide not less than 8 g and not more than 24 g of monensin activity). Feed continuously at a rate of 8 - 24 g monensin activity per tonne (1,000 kg).

Medicated supplement/premix fed as a % of total diet dry matter:

Including the medicated supplement/premix as a % of total dry matter is ideal. If the supplement/premix is to be fed as a % of total diet dry matter, to meet the approved drug level in the complete feed, the amount of monensin required per kg of supplement/premix dry matter is calculated by dividing the approved drug level by the desired % inclusion of supplement/premix into the diet on a 100% dry matter basis:

mg monensin/kg supplement/premix dry matter =

approved drug level (mg/kg total diet Dry Matter) x 100

_____________________________________________

(% supplement/premix of total diet dry matter)

Medicated supplement/premix fed as a fixed amount/head/day:

If the medicated supplement/premix is to be fed as a fixed amount per head in the total diet, the approved levels of monensin (i.e. mg/kg of total diet dry matter) must be converted to mg/head/day to accommodate this type of feeding. To do this the following calculation is used:

mg/head/day = weight of animal (kg) x dry matter intake (% of body weight) x approved drug level (mg/kg total diet Dry Matter).

This calculation has been made for a wide range of body weights, using six different dry matter intake levels and is available from the manufacturer. These calculations represent the correct levels of monensin sodium required per head per day for a given body weight.

Medicated supplement:

Indication 3: The medicated supplement must be prepared so that when it is hand fed as directed, at a minimum of 0.5 kg/head/day, it provides 200 mg of monensin activity per head per day. For example, if the medicated supplement is to be hand fed at 0.5 kg per head per day, it must have 2 kg of MONENSIN Premix added to it per 1,000 kg of supplement. The medicated supplement must be hand fed from the beginning to the end of the pasture season.

Hand feed at 200 mg of monensin activity per head per day in medicated supplement.

NOTE: Thixotrope liquid supplements should not be used for hand feeding of cattle on pasture.

Sheep and Goats:

Thoroughly mix not less than 55 g (0.055 kg) and not more than 110 g (0.11 kg) of MONENSIN Premix in 1 tonne (1,000 kg) of feed (to provide not less than 11 g and not more than 22 g monensin activity).

Sheep and Goats:

Feed continuously at a rate of not less than 11 g and not more than 22 g of monensin activity per tonne (1,000 kg).

NOTES:

1. All rations should be corrected to a 100% DRY MATTER BASIS.

2. All secondary premixes and supplements must be thoroughly mixed in the total diet or in complete feed (grain portion of the ration) before use. Do not feed undiluted.

3. Consult your veterinarian and/or nutritionist for additional information regarding the use of monensin in lactating dairy cattle.

CAUTIONS:

1. Do not use MONENSIN Premix for treatment of outbreaks of coccidiosis.

2. Do not exceed recommended levels as reduced average daily gains may result.

3. Do not allow canines, horses or other equines, or guinea fowl access to formulations containing monensin. Ingestion of monensin by these species has been fatal.

4. May be used in feeds containing the pellet binding agents bentonite (2%), Attapulgite (2%), Kaolin (2.5%), Lignin Sulfonate (4%), Carboxy Methylcellulose (0.1%) or Agri-Colloid.

5. Poultry consuming monensin should not be treated with products containing tiamulin. Severe growth depression may occur.

6. Some species of turkey coccidia may be monensin tolerant.

7. NOT TO BE USED AFTER EXPIRATION DATE. Do not use thixotropic supplement after eight weeks storage (Westway Feed Products).

8. The 24 g/tonne monensin treatment in primiparous cows may result in the increased incidence of udder edema and increased number of inseminations per full term conception.

9. The continuous use of monensin in dairy cows may be associated with increased rates of twinning and stillbirths, and heavier birth weights for heifer calves.

10. Do not use in lactating ewes or lactating goats

11. Feeding undiluted or mixing errors resulting in high concentrations of monensin could cause reduced feed intake, poor growth, diarrhoea, and death of sheep or goats.

12. Response to monensin sodium is unlikely if medicated feed intake is insufficient.

Warnings

1. For indications 1, 2 and 3 (beef cattle): Do not supplement monensin from other sources (e.g. other feedstuffs containing monensin or other slow release devices containing monensin).

2. For indications 4, 5 and 6 (dairy cattle): Do not supplement MONENSIN Premix above 16 ppm to dairy cows in herds administered slow release devices containing monensin.

3. When mixing and handling MONENSIN Premix, use protective clothing, impervious gloves and a dust mask to avoid inhalation, oral exposure and direct contact with skin or eyes. Operators should wash thoroughly with soap and water after handling.

4. No pre-slaughter withdrawal (beef cattle, broiler chickens, growing turkeys, sheep and goats) or milk withholding time (dairy cattle) is required when this drug product is used according to the label directions.

5. Do not feed to replacement and laying chickens and turkeys.

6. Do not use in lactating dairy sheep or goats producing milk for food.

7. Keep out of reach of children.
