Administration
The HEARTGARD-30 Tablet should be given so that dogs swallow the whole tablet. (The tablet may be wrapped in food to encourage consumption.) The dog should be closely observed for several minutes following administration to make sure that the entire dose has been consumed. If it is suspected that any of the dose has been lost, redosing is recommended. The proper dose should be given at monthly intervals during the period of the year when mosquitoes (vectors) potentially carrying infective heartworm larvae are active. The initial dose must be given within a month after the first exposure to mosquitoes. The final dose must be given within amonth after the last exposure to mosquitoes. When replacing another heartworm preventive in a heartworm prevention program, the first dose of HEARTGARD-30 Tablet must be given within a month after the last dose of the former medication.
If the interval between doses exceeds 30 days, the efficacy of HEARTGARD-30 Tablet will be reduced. Therefore, for optimal performance, HEARTGARD-30 Tablets must be given once a month on or about the same date. If treatment is delayed, whether by a few days or many, immediate treatment with HEARTGARD-30 Tablet and reinitiation of the recommended dosing regimen will minimize the opportunity for the development of adult heartworms.
Efficacy
HEARTGARD-30 Tablet, given orally using the recommended dose and regimen, is effective against the tissue larval stage acquired during the previous month (30 days) and, as a result, prevents the development of adult Dirofilaria immitis.Safety
Clinical studies have shown a wide safety margin at the recommended dose level in dogs including pregnant or breeding bitches, and stud dogs.Heartgard-30 Tablets for Dogs (136 mcg) Caution
To avoid future diagnostic confusion, all dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection prior to starting treatment with HEARTGARD-30 Tablet. (HEARTGARD-30 Tablet should be administered only to dogs found negative.) A mild hypersensitivity-type reaction, presumably due to dead or dying microfilariae and particularly involving a transient diarrhea, may occur after the treatment of dogs that have circulating microfilariae.WARNING: Keep this and all drugs out of the reach of children. In case of human consumption, clients should be advised to contact a physician immediately. Physicians may contact a Poison Control Center for advice concerning cases of human consumption.
