Manufacturer: United

Distemper Vaccine, Modified Live Virus

U.s. Vet. Lic. No.

245

Contents

FERVAC®-D consists of two components: A freeze-dried modified live distemper vaccine and sterile diluent used to dissolve the FERVAC®-D.

Preservative: Gentamicin.

Fervac-D Indications

FERVAC®-D aids in preventing distemper in healthy, susceptible ferrets from 8 weeks of age.

Fervac-D Dosage And Administration

Mixing the Vaccine:

1. Do not mix the vaccine until ready to use.

2. Mix only one pair of vials at a time, and use entire contents within 2 hours.

3. Disinfect rubber stoppers with alcohol; however, do not use a disinfectant on the needle or syringe.

4. To transfer the diluent into the bottle of FERVAC®-D, insert the short end of the double-pointed transfer needle into the diluent and turn the bottle upside down. Insert the other end of the transfer needle into the FERVAC®-D, causing the diluent to be drawn into the FERVAC®-D bottle by vacuum.

5. After all the diluent has been transferred, shake to suspend the vaccine evenly.

6. Do not transfer FERVAC®-D to other containers.

Use the accompanying diluent to dissolve the FERVAC®-D. Use sharp, sterile needles and sterile syringes. Inject 1 mL under the loose skin (armpit or back of neck) of ferrets. The initial dose is given at 8 weeks of age. Repeat the dose at 11 weeks of age and a final dose at 14 weeks of age. Give booster annually. To assure uniform suspension, shake before and occasionally during use. After use, burn the containers and unused contents.

Precaution(s)

Store at 2° to 7°C, 35° to 45°F.

Syringes and reusable, stainless steel needles may be sterilized by boiling them in distilled water for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not disinfect them with chemicals as these can destroy the vaccine.

Fervac-D Caution(s)

FERVAC®-D has been demonstrated to be a safe and efficacious aid in preventing distemper in healthy, susceptible ferrets if properly vaccinated after they are at least 8 weeks of age. Protective immunity develops approximately 3 weeks after vaccination.

Read full directions before use. Use entire contents within 2 hours after mixing. Circumstances such as incubating diseases, maternal immunity, Aleutian disease, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and parasitism may exist undetected at the time of vaccination and may result in incomplete protection from vaccination. If distemper is diagnosed in previously vaccinated ferrets, immediate notification of United is recommended.

Antidote(s)

Epinephrine. It is advisable to have epinephrine on hand prior to starting vaccination should anaphylactic reactions appeared.

Warning(s)

For veterinary use only.

Discussion

1. Risk of infectious disease can be minimized by taking the following measures:

a. Prevent pets and wild animals from having access to your ferrets.

b. Do not introduce new ferrets to the facility without at least a 30 day quarantine period.

c. Test all new ferrets twice for Aleutian disease by using the counterelectrophoresis (CEP) test before introducing them onto your facility; one test 30 days before, and the second test just prior to bringing them onto the facility.

d. Always vaccinate new ferrets against distemper at least 21 days before introducing them to your facility and observe them during this period.

e. Limit visitors to your facility and provide protective coverings for feet and clothing.

For additional information to reduce the possibility of disease, or the spread of an existing disease, contact your veterinarian or United.

2. Should disease occur in unvaccinated ferrets, the losses may be minimized by promptly vaccinating those which are not showing signs of disease. One reasonable approach is to first vaccinate the ferrets located the farthest distance from those showing symptoms. Where possible, isolate sick animals from healthy ones. Avoid working in an area with known sick animals unless you change clothing. Care should be taken to use a separate sterile needle for each animal and disinfect handling gloves as often as is practical. Consult your veterinarian regarding treatment and handling of sick animals.

3. Ferrets infected, yet not showing signs of disease at the time of vaccination, will not be protected by the vaccine. Symptoms of distemper may continue to develop for as long as several months after vaccination.

4. Consult your veterinarian or United before using this vaccine on a facility where disease exists or has occurred in the last 18 months.

5. Keep a record of vaccine brand names, quantity, serial numbers, expiration dates, and place of purchase. Record the date of vaccination, age and location of ferrets.
