Manufacturer: Intervet

DIN 02057751

FOR VETERINARY USE ONLY

DESCRIPTION

Fertagyl is a sterile aqueous solution containing 100 mcg of gonadorelin as the decapeptide (GnRH) per ml.

INDICATIONS

Fertagyl is indicated for the treatment of repeat breeder dairy cows on or at the time of their third or greater service.

DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Using sterile equipment, inject 100-200 mcg intramuscularly.

PHARMACOLOGY

Fertagyl (gonadorelin) is the synthetic equivalent of the natural gonadotrophin releasing hormone, a decapeptide produced in the hypothalamus which acts on the anterior pituitary to bring about the release of both LH and FSH.

Shortly after administration of Fertagyl, LH and FSH will be released from the pituitary. At the recommended dose, a marked increase in LH levels will be induced and optimal FSH release will be obtained. The FSH and LH released will induce follicle maturation and subsequent ovulation following the normal physiological pattern. Fertagyl exerts a favourable influence on the ovaries during the follicular phase of the oestrus cycle.

Fertagyl contains a naturally occurring peptide hormone which does not have toxic properties. In clinical and pharmacological experiments, adverse effects were not observed after administration.

In acute toxicity studies in mice, very high doses of Fertagyl were given without any physiological abnormalities being recorded. The highest dose used in the experiments was 50,000 times the therapeutic dose on a mg/kg basis. In another study in cattle, 100 fold therapeutic doses were tolerated without any adverse reactions.

In a Canadian study carried out in 93 commercial dairy herds in Ontario, repeat breeder cows treated at the time of their third or greater service showed improved pregnancy rates of eight (8) per cent over the untreated controls.

Precautions

Refrigerate at 6-25º C. Protect from light.

WARNING

Treated animals must not be slaughtered for use in food for at least 7 days after the latest treatment with the drug.
