For subcutaneous vaccination of healthy cats 8 weeks of age or older as an aid in the prevention of infection with feline immunodeficiency virus. Efficacy was demonstrated in cats that received three doses of vaccine and were challenged one year post vaccination with a heterologous FIV strain. In one study the vaccine protected 67% of the vaccinates against infection (any cat that showed evidence of integration of the viral genome into its white blood cells was considered infected) while 74% of the controls became persistently viremic. In a more recent one year study, the vaccine protected 84% of the vaccinates against infection while 90% of the controls became persistently viremic.
