DermaTect Kit Indications

DERMATECT is a formulation for dermatophytes with a yellow to red pH indicator for the growth of dermatophytes and related fungi. Gentamicin and chlortetracycline retard the growth of most bacteria, while cycloheximide inhibits the development of most saprophytic fungi.

Test Procedure

The specimen should be inoculated immediately onto the DERMATECT vial. Cutaneous specimens should be implanted by pressing the samples into the agar surface. Incubation at temperatures of 20°-30°C is satisfactory for the growth of most dermatophytes. Optimal growth and indicator change occurs at 29°C. To ensure the presence of an aerobic environment for the best recovery of dermatophytes, do not tighten the tube caps.

After 24 hours the test media may be examined for a color change from yellow to red. Most pathogenic dermatophytes will produce full color changes in three (3) to six (6) days. Other organisms may grow on DERMATECT but can be recognized as non-dermatophytes by the absence of color change or by their colonial appearance.

Inoculation onto a conventional cultivation medium is recommended for the identification of species when DERMATECT suggests the presence of a dermatophyte.
