This is a live bacterial vaccine containing the known avirulent isolate of Pasteurella multocida, type 3 x 4, Clemson University (CU) strain, in a freeze-dried preparation sealed under vacuum.

The seed culture used to make this vaccine has been laboratory tested for protection against challenge with P. multocida strain X-73 (type 1).

Choleramune CU Indications

This vaccine is recommended for use in healthy chickens six weeks of age or older as an aid in preventing pasteurellosis (fowl cholera) due to Pasteurella multocida type 1.

The CU vaccine strain has been shown to offer protection against naturally occurring field strains of P. multocida.

Choleramune CU Dosage And Administration

Administer contents of vial to 500 chickens by wing web stab (0.01 mL). Best results are obtained when vaccine is administered initially to chickens 6 to 12 weeks of age and again at 4 to 6 week intervals.

Chickens to be vaccinated should not be given any antibiotic and/or sulfonamide medication for 3 days before and 5 days after vaccination to avoid interference with the immune response.

How To Vaccinate:

1. Keep refrigerated until use. After rehydration, use entire contents within 2 hours.

2. Rehydrate the vaccine vial with the entire contents of the diluent vial provided (5 mL). Mix well.

3. Vaccinate by dipping the applicator needle into the rehydrated vaccine and piercing the webbed portion under the wing. Guard against losing vaccine by touching feathers with applicator. Avoid piercing the wing muscle, bone or large blood vessels.

4. Re-dip the applicator between each vaccination. Remove excess vaccine on applicator by touching to inside of vial.

Contraindication(s)

Chickens should be healthy and free of environmental or physical stress at the time of vaccination. Initial vaccination should not be conducted in chickens older than 12 weeks of age, as this may result in larger granulomas at the site of inoculation which may cause possible carcass downgrading at slaughter.

Precaution(s)

Store between 35° to 45°F (2°-7°C).

Since this is a live bacterial culture, caution should be used to avoid contact with open wounds or accidental inoculation of personnel. If this occurs, consult a physician immediately.

Warning(s)

Do not vaccinate within 21 days before slaughter.

Adverse Reactions

Usually, there is no clinical reaction to this vaccine. However, a small granuloma will develop at the site of inoculation 5 to 10 days after vaccination. The absence of a reaction may indicate that the birds were immune prior to vaccination or that the vaccine was improperly handled or administered.
