Mink Distemper-Enteritis Vaccine, Modified Live and Killed Virus-Clostridium botulinum Type C Bacterin-Toxoid

U.s. Vet. Lic. No.

245

Contents

BIOCOM®-D consists of two components: A freeze-dried modified live distemper vaccine, Distemink®, and a liquid inactivated vaccine, Biocom®, containing Mink Enteritis Virus and Cl. botulinum Type C. Biocom® is used to dissolve the Distemink®.

Preservatives: Gentamicin and thimerosal.

Biocom-D Indications

BIOCOM®-D aids in preventing distemper, virus enteritis Types 1 and 2 and Type C botulism in healthy, susceptible mink at least 10 weeks of age.

Biocom-D Dosage And Administration

Use the accompanying Biocom® to dissolve the Distemink®. Use sharp, sterile needles and sterile syringes. Inject 1 mL under the loose skin of the armpit of mink at least 10 weeks old. To assure uniform suspension, shake before and occasionally during use. Revaccinate all adults at the time of kit vaccination. After use, burn the containers and unused contents.

Mixing the Vaccines:

1. Do not mix the vaccines until ready to use.

2. Mix only one pair of vials at a time, and use entire contents within 2 hours.

3. Disinfect rubber stoppers with alcohol; however, do not use a disinfectant on the needle or syringe.

4. To transfer the Biocom® into the bottle of Distemink®, shake the Biocom® to obtain a uniform suspension and insert the short end of the double-pointed transfer needle. Turn the bottle upside down and insert the other end of the transfer needle into the Distemink®, causing the Biocom® to be drawn into the Distemink® bottle by vacuum.

5. After all the Biocom® has been transferred, shake to suspend the vaccine evenly.

6. Do not transfer BIOCOM®-D to other containers.

Precaution(s)

Store at 2° to 7°C, 35° to 45°F.

Syringes and reusable, stainless steel needles may be sterilized by boiling them in distilled water for 15 to 20 minutes. Do not disinfect them with chemicals as these can destroy the vaccine.

Biocom-D Caution(s)

BIOCOM®-D has been demonstrated to be a safe and efficacious aid in preventing distemper, virus enteritis and Type C botulism in healthy, susceptible mink if properly vaccinated after they are at least 10 weeks old. Protective immunity develops approximately 3 weeks after vaccination.

Read full directions before use. Use entire contents within 2 hours after mixing. Circumstances such as incubating diseases, maternal immunity, Aleutian disease, nutritional deficiencies, stress, and parasitism may exist undetected at the time of vaccination and may result in incomplete protection from vaccination. If one of the diseases listed in the Indications is diagnosed in previously vaccinated mink, immediate notification of United is recommended. Sudden death in a high percentage of mink can occur from exposure to botulism toxin in newly weaned kits. Therefore, a separate vaccination with Cl. botulinum Type C Bacterin-Toxoid is recommended when kits are at least six weeks old.

Antidote(s)

Epinephrine. It is advisable to have epinephrine on hand prior to starting vaccination should anaphylactic reactions appeared.

Warning(s)

For veterinary use only.

Discussion

1. Risk of infectious disease can be minimized by taking the following measures:

a. Install and maintain fences to prevent pets and wild animals from entering the farm.

b. Do not introduce new mink to the farm without at least a 30 day quarantine.

c. Test all new mink twice for Aleutian disease by using the counterelectrophoresis (CEP) test before introducing them onto your farm; one test 30 days before, and the second test just prior to bringing them onto the farm.

d. Always vaccinate all new mink against botulism, virus enteritis, distemper and Pseudomonas pneumonia at least 21 days before introducing them to your farm and observe them during this period.

e. Limit visitors to your farm and provide protective coverings for feet and clothing.

f. Proper feed handling prevents toxin formation which can overwhelm the botulism protection provided by this product.

For additional information to reduce the possibility of disease, or the spread of an existing disease, contact your veterinarian or United.

2. Should disease occur in unvaccinated mink, the losses may be minimized by promptly vaccinating those which are not showing signs of disease. One reasonable approach is to first vaccinate the mink located the farthest distance from those showing symptoms. Where possible, isolate sick animals from healthy ones. Avoid working in an area with known sick animals unless you change clothing. Care should be taken to use a separate sterile needle for each animal and disinfect handling gloves as often as is practical. Consult your veterinarian regarding treatment and handling of sick animals.

3. Mink infected, yet not showing signs of disease at the time of vaccination, will not be protected by the vaccine. Symptoms of distemper may continue to develop for as long as several months after vaccination.

4. Consult your veterinarian or United before using this vaccine on a farm where disease exists or has occurred in the last 18 months.

5. Keep a record of vaccine brand names, quantity, serial numbers, expiration dates, and place of purchase. Record the date of vaccination, age and location of mink.
