For Veterinary Use Only
Directions For Use
Recommendation For Use
This vaccine is recommended for the immunization of pigeons as an aid in the prevention of pigeon pox. It is produced specifically for pigeons using a pigeon isolate.Description
This product is supplied as a vial of lyophilized (freeze dried) vaccine with a vial of diluent and a vaccinating brush for application of the vaccine by the feather follicle method.Age To Vaccinate
Young birds should be vaccinated at 4 weeks of age or older but at least 4 weeks before they are exposed to other pigeons (before racing or showing). All susceptible birds in the loft should be vaccinated at the same time. This is a live virus vaccine and it can spread to other birds that come in contact with it. It takes 3 to 4 weeks to obtain maximum protection. Whereas the duration of immunity is not permanent, birds should be revaccinated annually.Preparation Of Vaccine
Remove the aluminum seals and rubber stoppers from the vaccine and diluent vials. Pour the diluent into the vaccine vial. Replace the rubber stopper and shake well to dissolve the vaccine. The vaccine should not be mixed with the diluent until it is ready for use.Vaccination Procedure
Pull 5 to 10 feathers from the leg or breast, being careful not to tear the skin. Dip the brush into the vaccine and brush the vaccine into the open feather follicles. Be sure to dip the brush into the vaccine for each bird.
Vaccination Takes
At 7 to 14 days after vaccination each bird should be examined for "take" at the site of vaccination. In the early stages the feather follicles should be swollen and have a yellow to brown appearance. This may later develop into a scab. If a "take" does not occur, the bird should be revaccinated. If birds are being revaccinated, takes may not occur, because the birds have immunity from the previous vaccination.Vaccination Reaction
Susceptible pigeons may show some lack of activity or depression within the first 2 or 3 weeks after vaccination. It is necessary to develop a mild disease in order to obtain good immunity against later exposure to the pigeon pox virus.Warning
This is a live virus vaccine. Vaccinate all susceptible birds in the loft at the same time. Prevent exposure of unvaccinated birds. Do not fly birds for 4 weeks after vaccination. The vaccine can cause feather discoloration in show birds.
