Side Effects by Body System
Local
Local adverse effects may include transient stinging, burning, or pain when applying acyclovir to herpetic lesions. The pain is generally due to manipulation of the lesions rather than a reaction to the drug itself.
Dermatologic
Dermatologic reactions may include rash and itching. At least one patient has reported contact dermatitis. Drying and flaking of skin, dry or cracked lips, burning, and stinging have been reported in less than 1% of patients.
General
Acyclovir topical has been generally well tolerated and adverse effects are uncommon.
