Vitamin D2 Side Effects

Generic name: ergocalciferol

For the Consumer

Applies to ergocalciferol: oral capsule, oral solution

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking ergocalciferol (the active ingredient contained in Vitamin D2) hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • thinking problems, changes in behavior, feeling irritable;

  • urinating more than usual;

  • chest pain, feeling short of breath; or

  • early signs of vitamin D overdose (weakness, metallic taste in your mouth, weight loss, muscle or bone pain, constipation, nausea, and vomiting).

Metabolic

Metabolic side effects have included hypercalcemia.

Hypercalciuria may precede hypercalcemia in patients being treated with ergocalciferol. Early signs and symptoms of hypercalcemia include headache, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal cramps, dry mouth, metallic taste, weakness, fatigue, muscle and bone pain, ataxia, tinnitus, and vertigo. Later stages of hypercalcemia may present as pruritus, mental confusion, hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, metastatic calcification, and renal insufficiency (manifested as polyuria, nocturia, polydipsia, and proteinuria).
