As well as its needed effects, dextromethorphan (the active ingredient contained in Tussin Pediatric) may cause unwanted side effects that require medical attention.
If any of the following side effects occur while taking dextromethorphan, check with your doctor or nurse as soon as possible:Symptoms of overdose
- Blurred vision
- difficulty in urination
- drowsiness or dizziness
- nausea or vomiting (severe)
- shakiness and unsteady walk
- slowed breathing
- unusual excitement, nervousness, restlessness, or irritability (severe)
Some dextromethorphan side effects may not need any medical attention. As your body gets used to the medicine these side effects may disappear. Your health care professional may be able to help you prevent or reduce these side effects, but do check with them if any of the following side effects continue, or if you are concerned about them:Less common or rare
- dizziness (mild)
- drowsiness (mild)
- nausea or vomiting
- stomach pain

Nervous system side effects have included drowsiness and dizziness. Other side effects such as excitation, mental confusion, and opioid like respiratory depression have been rare and occurred at higher dosages. In some cases of abuse, patients experienced euphoria, hyperactivity, mania, and auditory and visual hallucinations.
Gastrointestinal side effects have included stomach upset.
Hypersensitivity side effects have included rare reports of fixed-drug eruptions.
