As well as its needed effects, tolnaftate topical (the active ingredient contained in Tinactin) may cause unwanted side effects that require medical attention.

If any of the following side effects occur while taking tolnaftate topical, check with your doctor or nurse as soon as possible:

  • Skin irritation not present before use of this medicine

When you apply the aerosol solution form of this medicine, a mild temporary stinging may be expected.

Dermatologic

A case of sensitization to butylated hydroxytoluene which is found in some of the tolnaftate topical (the active ingredient contained in Tinactin) preparations has been reported.[Ref]

Dermatologic side effects have included a mild skin irritation.[Ref]
