Side Effects of Senna - for the Consumer
Senna Plus
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. When used in small doses, no COMMON side effects have been reported with Senna Plus. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Senna Plus:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; severe stomach pain.
Senna-Lax
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Senna-Lax:
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Senna-Lax:Abdominal discomfort or cramping; diarrhea; nausea.
TopSevere allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); kidney inflammation; poor bowel function; rectal bleeding.
Side Effects by Body System
Gastrointestinal
Gastrointestinal side effects have included esophageal impaction and duodenal bezoars. These effects have been reported in patients receiving a bulk laxative product containing 82% psyllium and 18% senna (commercially available as Perdiem Overnight Relief).
Hypersensitivity
Hypersensitivity side effects have rarely included occupational sensitization to senna.
One case has been reported involving a factory worker who developed IgE-mediated asthma and rhinoconjunctivitis five months after exposure to senna.
Musculoskeletal
Musculoskeletal side effects have rarely included finger clubbing.
