For the Consumer

Applies to phendimetrazine: oral capsule extended release, oral tablet

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking phendimetrazine: hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using phendimetrazine and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion;

  • chest pain, feeling like you might pass out;

  • swelling in your ankles or feet;

  • pounding heartbeats or fluttering in your chest;

  • confusion or irritability, unusual thoughts or behavior;

  • feelings of extreme happiness or sadness; or

  • dangerously high blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision, buzzing in your ears, anxiety, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, uneven heartbeats, seizure).

Less serious side effects of phendimetrazine may include:

  • feeling restless or hyperactive;

  • headache, dizziness, tremors;

  • sleep problems (insomnia);

  • flushing (warmth, redness, or tingly feeling);

  • dry mouth;

  • diarrhea or constipation, upset stomach; or

  • increased or decreased interest in sex, impotence.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects including palpitation, tachycardia, and elevation of blood pressure have been reported. A case of dilated cardiomyopathy has been associated with chronic use of phendimetrazine.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects including overstimulation, restlessness, dizziness, insomnia, tremor, and headache have been reported. Psychotic episodes (at recommended doses), agitation, flushing, and sweating have been reported rarely.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects including dryness of mouth, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and stomach pain have been reported.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects including changes in libido, urinary frequency, and dysuria have been reported.

Ocular

Ocular side effects including blurring of vision have been reported.
