Orphenate Side Effects

For the Consumer

Applies to orphenadrine: oral tablet extended release

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking orphenadrine (the active ingredient contained in Orphenate) hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using orphenadrine and call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • fast, pounding, or uneven heartbeats;

  • confusion, anxiety, agitation, tremors, hallucinations;

  • seizure (convulsions); or

  • urinating less than usual or not at all.

Less serious side effects of orphenadrine may include:

  • dry mouth or throat;

  • blurred vision, dilated pupils;

  • headache;

  • drowsiness, dizziness;

  • nausea, vomiting, constipation; or

  • weakness.

Applies to orphenadrine: compounding powder, injectable solution, oral tablet extended release

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included headache, light-headedness, dizziness, drowsiness, syncope and tremor. Infrequently, elderly patients have experienced mental confusion.

Ocular

Ocular side effects have included blurred vision, dilatation of pupils, and increased ocular tension.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular side effects have included tachycardia and palpitations.

Genitourinary

Genitourinary side effects have included urinary hesitancy and retention.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and gastric irritation.

Musculoskeletal

Musculoskeletal side effects have included weakness.

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects have included pruritus, and rarely, urticaria and other dermatosis.

Psychiatric

Psychiatric side effects have included hallucinations and agitation.

Hematologic

Hematologic side effects have included very rare cases of aplastic anemia, however, no causal relationship has been established.
