Cardiovascular

Regardless of the contrast medium employed, the overall incidence of serious adverse reaction is higher with coronary arteriography than with other procedures. Cardiac decompensation, serious arrhythmias, myocardial ischemia, or myocardial infarction may occur during coronary arteriography and left ventriculography.

Cardiovascular side effects including angina pectoris, hypotension, blood pressure fluctuation, arterial spasm, bradycardia, conduction defect, false aneurysm, hypertension, transient arrhythmia, and vascular trauma have been reported in patients receiving ioversol. Serious, life-threatening, and fatal reactions, angioneurotic edema, peripheral edema, vasodilation, thrombosis, and rarely thrombophlebitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and shock have been associated with the administration of iodine-containing contrast media.

Respiratory

Respiratory side effects including laryngeal edema, pulmonary edema, sneezing, congestion, coughing, shortness of breath, and hypoxia have been reported. Choking, dyspnea, wheezing (which may be an initial manifestation of more severe and infrequent reactions including asthmatic attack), laryngospasm, bronchospasm, apnea, and cyanosis have been reported with the use of other contrast agents and are possible with any water soluble, iodinated contrast agent.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects including nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth have been reported.

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects including headache, cerebral infarct, vertigo, lightheadedness, visual hallucination, vasovagal reaction disorientation, paresthesia, dysphasia, muscle spasm, and syncope have been reported with the use of ioversol. Convulsions, aphasia, paralysis, coma, and death have been reported with the use of other contrast agents and are possible with any water soluble, iodinated contrast agent.

Ocular

Ocular side effects including blurred vision have been reported with the use of ioversol. Visual field losses which are usually transient but may be permanent have been reported with the use of other contrast agents and are possible with any water soluble, iodinated contrast agent.

Dermatologic

Dermatologic side effects including periorbital edema, urticaria, pruritus, facial edema, flush, and erythema have been reported. Maculopapular rash, erythema, conjunctival symptoms, ecchymosis, and tissue necrosis have been reported with the use of other contrast agents and are possible with any water soluble, iodinated contrast agent.

Local

Local side effects including extravasation have been reported.

Hematologic

Hematologic side effects including hematoma have been reported.

General

General side effects including shaking chills, general pain, and fever have been reported with the use of ioversol. Hyperthermia has been reported with the use of other contrast agents and is possible with any water soluble, iodinated contrast agent.

Other

Other side effects including bad taste have been reported.

Renal

Renal side effects including renal colic, urinary retention, and polyuria have been reported with the use of ioversol. Temporary anuria and other nephropathies have been reported with the use of other contrast agents and are possible with any water soluble, iodinated contrast agent.
