Applies to glycerin: rectal enema, rectal suppository

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction while taking glycerin (the active ingredient contained in Glycerin Suppositories Maximum Strength) hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Stop using glycerin rectal and call your doctor at once if you have a serious side effect such as:

  • severe stomach pain or cramping

  • bloody diarrhea; or

  • severe rectal pain, bleeding, or irritation.

Less serious side effects of glycerin may include:

  • diarrhea;

  • nausea or stomach discomfort; or

  • mild rectal pain or burning.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects associated with rectal administration have included rectal discomfort, irritation, burning or griping, cramping pain, tenesmus, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea. Hyperemia of the rectal mucosa with minimal amounts of hemorrhage and mucus discharge has been reported.
