Side Effects of Elimite - for the Consumer

Elimite Cream

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using Elimite Cream:

Itching; mild burning or stinging; redness; swelling.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Elimite Cream:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue).

Elimite Side Effects - for the Professional

Elimite

In clinical trials, generally mild and transient burning and stinging followed application with Elimite® (permethrin) 5% Cream in 10% of patients and was associated with the severity of infestation. Pruritus was reported in 7% of patients at various times post-application. Erythema, numbness, tingling, and rash were reported in 1 to 2% or less of patients. Other adverse events reported since marketing Elimite® (permethrin) 5% Cream include: headache, fever, dizziness, abdominal pain, diarrhea and nausea and/or vomiting. Although extremely uncommon and not expected when used as directed, rare occurrences of seizure have been reported. None have been medically confirmed as associated with Elimite® treatment.

Side Effects by Body System

Local

Local side effects have included mild and transient burning and stinging usually associated with the severity of infestation.

Dermatologic

Dermatological side effects have included pruritus (7%), erythema (1% to 2 %), and rash (1% to 2 %).

Nervous system

Nervous system side effects have included numbness and tingling (1% to 2%). Headache and dizziness have also been reported. Rare occurrences of seizure have been reported; however, an association with the use of permethrin topical has not been confirmed.

Gastrointestinal

Gastrointestinal side effects have included abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea and/or vomiting.

General

General side effects have included fever.
