Terbinafine Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings

Terbinafine is also known as: Lamisil

Terbinafine Pregnancy Warnings

Terbinafine has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. High dose reproduction studies in rats and rabbits have failed to reveal evidence of impaired fertility or fetotoxicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Because treatment of onychomycosis or tinea capitis can be postponed until after pregnancy is completed, the manufacturer recommends that terbinafine not be started during pregnancy. Terbinafine is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Terbinafine Breastfeeding Warnings

Terbinafine is excreted into human milk following oral administration. The effects in the nursing infant are unknown. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

The ratio of terbinafine in milk to plasma is 7:1.
