Sodium benzoate / sodium phenylacetate Pregnancy Warnings

Extensive testing of sodium benzoate as a food preservative found that it is not mutagenic, carcinogenic and it does not impair fertility. Studies to determine the carcinogenicity, mutagenicity and impairment of fertility have not been conducted on sodium phenylacetate. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy or fertility for sodium benzoate-sodium phenylacetate. FDA pregnancy category C: Animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

FDA pregnancy category: C Use of sodium benzoate-sodium phenylacetate is not recommended unless clearly needed.
