Pilocarpine ophthalmic Pregnancy Warnings
A case report describes the use of pilocarpine ophthalmic 1% and 2% during an entire pregnancy, with no adverse effects on the neonate.
Pilocarpine ophthalmic preparations have been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal data regarding the use of this product during pregnancy are not available. It is not known whether pilocarpine ophthalmic gel or solution can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproductive capacity. Although the use of pilocarpine ophthalmic inserts (Pilo-20 or Pilo-40) have not been reported to have adverse effects on pregnancy, the safety of their use in pregnant women has not been absolutely established. Pilocarpine ophthalmic preparations should only be given during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
Pilocarpine ophthalmic Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of pilocarpine ophthalmic into human milk. The manufacturer recommends caution when administering pilocarpine ophthalmic to nursing women.
