Nelfinavir Pregnancy and Breast Feeding Warnings

Nelfinavir is also known as: Viracept

Overview

If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Nelfinavir Powder while you are pregnant. Mothers infected with HIV should not breast-feed. There is a risk of passing the HIV infection or Nelfinavir Powder to the baby.

Nelfinavir Pregnancy Warnings

Nelfinavir has been assigned to pregnancy category B by the FDA. Reproduction studies in rats and rabbits have failed to reveal evidence of embryolethality or fetotoxicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Nelfinavir should only be given during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk. Nelfinavir (1250 mg twice daily) is recommended as an alternate protease inhibitor during pregnancy.

Compared with nonpregnant patients, nelfinavir plasma concentrations are noticeably reduced in pregnant women, especially during the third trimester. Although nelfinavir 1250 mg twice daily yields sufficient drug concentrations in pregnant women, nelfinavir 750 mg three times daily shows more variable and low drug levels. An Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry has been established to monitor maternal-fetal outcome of nelfinavir exposures during pregnancy. Physicians are encouraged to register patients by calling 1-800-258-4263 (USA).

Nelfinavir Lactation Warnings

There are no data on the excretion of nelfinavir into human milk. Nelfinavir is excreted into the milk of rats. HIV-infected mothers should not breast-feed their infants due to the risk of transmission of HIV via breast milk.
