Dapsone topical Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings

Dapsone topical is also known as: Aczone

Dapsone topical Pregnancy Warnings

Dapsone topical has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of an embryocidal effect in rats and rabbits following administration of oral dapsone at dosages achieving systemic levels equal to 800 to 500 times the systemic exposure observed in human females following the maximum topical dosage. This effect is probably secondary to maternal toxicity. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Dapsone topical is only recommended during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.

Dapsone topical Breastfeeding Warnings

There are no data on the excretion of dapsone topical into human milk. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue dapsone topical, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
