Ciprofloxacin / dexamethasone otic Pregnancy Warnings
Ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone otic has been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies with large oral and intravenous ciprofloxacin have revealed no evidence of embryotoxicity, fetotoxicity, or teratogenicity; however, some maternal toxicity (gastrointestinal disturbances, weight loss, and abortion) was observed. Corticosteroids have demonstrated teratogenicity in animal studies. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. The manufacturer recommends caution if ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone otic is used during pregnancy.
Ciprofloxacin / dexamethasone otic Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of ciprofloxacin-dexamethasone otic into human milk. Oral ciprofloxacin and corticosteroids are excreted into milk. Dexamethasone in breast milk may suppress the nursing infant's growth and interfere with endogenous corticosteroid production. The manufacturer recommends that due to the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
