Carbidopa / levodopa Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings
Carbidopa / levodopa is also known as: Atamet, Parcopa, Sinemet, Sinemet CR
Overview
If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of taking Carbidopa/Levodopa Sustained-Release Tablets while you are pregnant. It is not known if Carbidopa/Levodopa Sustained-Release Tablets are found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you are taking Carbidopa/Levodopa Sustained-Release Tablets, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.
Carbidopa / levodopa Pregnancy Warnings
One study has reported that single oral doses of levodopa administered to pregnant women resulted in decreased plasma renin activity, decreased plasma aldosterone and decreased plasma prolactin.
Levodopa-carbidopa formulations have been assigned to pregnancy category C by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence of visceral and skeletal malformations in rabbits at doses 5 to 20 times the maximum recommended human dose of levodopa-carbidopa. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Two reports have described three patients who received levodopa or levodopa-carbidopa throughout pregnancy without evidence of fetal harm. Levodopa-carbidopa is only recommended for use during pregnancy when benefit outweighs risk.
Carbidopa / levodopa Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of levodopa or carbidopa into human milk. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, a decision should be made to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
