Asparaginase Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Warnings
Asparaginase is also known as: Elspar
Overview
If you become pregnant, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Asparaginase during pregnancy. It is unknown if Asparaginase is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Asparaginase.
Asparaginase Pregnancy Warnings
Asparaginase has been assigned to pregnancy category C. Animal studies have revealed evidence of resorptions, gross abnormalities, skeletal abnormalities, and embryotoxicity. Use of asparaginase in animal testing has also been reported to retard the weight gain of mothers and fetuses. There are no controlled data in human pregnancy. Use of asparaginase is only recommended during pregnancy if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk.
Asparaginase Breastfeeding Warnings
There are no data on the excretion of asparaginase into human milk. Because many drugs are secreted into human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from asparaginase, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
